THE NECESSITY OF PROPAGANDA

1
It is possible that in our land not everything goes as it should.
But no one can doubt that the propaganda is good.
Even the hungry must admit
that the Minister of Nutrition gives a good speech.

5

A good propagandist
makes a vacation resort out of a manure pile.
If there’s nothing to eat, he argues
that a slim waist improves everyone’s appearance.
Thousands who hear him talk about the highways
are delighted, as if they had cars.
On the graves of those who starved to death or were killed
he plants laurel bushes. But long before things had come so far,
he spoke of peace, as the cannons rolled by.

6

Only through superb propaganda was it possible
to persuade millions
that the build-up of the army is a work of peace,
each new tank a dove of peace,
and each new regiment new proof
of the love of peace.

7

True, good speeches can do a lot,
but they can’t do everything. You already hear
people saying, it’s a shame that the word “meat”
isn’t enough to fill your belly, and a shame
that the word “suit” does little to keep you warm.
When the Minister of Planning gives his speech praising the superior new yarn,
it must not rain, otherwise
his audience will be left standing in their shirtsleeves.

8

And one other thing that gives one pause
about the purpose of propaganda: the more
propaganda there is in our country,
the less there is of other things.

Translated from German by Jon Swan

A PROPAGANDA SZÜKSÉGESSÉGE

1

A jó propagandista
 trágyadombból kirándulóhelyet csinál.
Ha nincs zsír, bebizonyítja,
Hogy mindenkit megszépít a karcsú derék.
S a sokaság, ha autósztrádákról hallja beszélni,
Úgy örül, mintha autója volna.
Az éhenhaltak és az elesettek sírján
Babérligetet ültet. De jóval ezelőtt
A békéről beszélt, míg tovadübörögtek az ágyuk.

6

Csak példás propaganda győzheti meg
A milliókat arról,
Hogy a Werhmacht kiépítése a béke műve, hogy
Minden új tank egy békegalamb,
És minden új ezred a békeszeretet
Bizonyítéka.

7

Persze: ha sok mindenre jó is a jó beszéd,
Mindent mégse tehet meg. Van aki
Már mondja is: Ejnye, de kár, hogy
A "hús" szó egymaga még nem tömi meg a bendőt,
S a "ruha" szó oly kevés meleget ad.
S amikor a tervminiszter az új, finom gyapjút magasztalja,
Megálljt parancsol az esőnek, nehogy
A hallgatók ingben maradjanak.

8

És még valamiért kell kissé eltűnődni
A propaganda célján: feltűnő ugyanis,
Hogy minél több hazánkban a propaganda,
Annál kevesebb minden egyéb.
