Alfred Jarry: Ubu Roi

96:39
Director: Jean-Christophe Averty
  source: UbuWeb

The plays of Alfred Jarry are considered by many to be the first dramatic works of the theatre of the absurd. They are credited with a great number of literary innovations and are seen as major influences of the dada and symbolist movements in art. Ubu Roi (translated as King Ubu and King Turd) is Jarry’s most famous work. Ubu Roi eliminates the dramatic action from its Shakespearean antecedents and uses scatological humor and farce to present Jarry’s views on art, literature, politics, the ruling classes, and current events.

Wisława Szymborska: THE RAILROAD STATION

THE RAILROAD STATION

My nonarrival in the city of N.
took place on the dot.

You’d been alerted
in my unmailed letter.

You were able not to be there
at the agreed-upon time.

The train pulled up at Platform 3.
A lot of people got out.

My absence joined the throng
as it made its way toward the exit.

Several women rushed
to take my place
in all that rush.

Somebody ran up to one of them.
I didn’t know him,
but she recognized him
immediately.

While they kissed
with not our lips,
a suitcase disappeared,
not mine.

The railroad station in the city of N.
passed its exam
in objective existence
with flying colors.

The whole remained in place.
Particulars scurried
along the designated tracks.

Even a rendezvous
took place as planned.

Beyond the reach
of our presence.

In the paradise lost
of probability.

Somewhere else.
Somewhere else.
How these little words ring.

PÁLYAUDVAR

N. városba való oda-nem-érkezésem
megtörtént pontosan.

Kaptál felőle hírt egy
el nem küldött levélben.

Sikerült nem jönnöd elém
kiszámitott időre.

Vonatom beállt a harmadik peronra.
Kiszállt sok ember.

Ment a kijárat fele a tömegben
személyiségem hiánya.

Néhány nő helyettesített
gyorsan
a nagy sietésben.

Közülük egy szaladt
egy nekem idegenhez,
de nő a férfit
fölismerte nyomban.

Nem csókolt csókunk
egymásnak adták
s köztük eltűnt a
nem-enyém bőrönd.

N. város pályaudvara
jól vizsgázott
objektiv létezésből.

Saját helyén állt minden.
Legapróbb részletek is
szabott pályán mozogtak.

Még a kivánt találkozás is
megvolt.

Jelenlétünk
hatókörén kívül.

A valószínűség
elvesztett édenében.

Valahol másutt.
Másutt.
Hogy csengettyűz e szó.

Arany János (1817. március 2. – 1882. október 22)

Civilizáció

Ezelőtt a háborúban
Nem követtek semmi elvet,
Az erősebb a gyengétől
Amit elvehetett, elvett.

Most nem úgy van. A világot
Értekezlet igazgatja:
S az erősebb ha mi csinyt tesz,
Összeűl és - helybehagyja.

1877

In the past the warring nations
Did not follow any precept:
The strong plundered what he could, and
Everything he looted, he kept.

That has changed now, as the world has
A more legalistic flavour:
When the strong now do some mischief
They confer and - vote in favour.

Robert Lowell (March 1, 1917 – September 12, 1977)

Watchmaker God

Say life is the one-way trip, the one-way flight,
say this without hysterical undertones-
then you could say you stood in the cold light of science,
seeing as you are seen, espoused to fact.
Strange, life is both the fire and fuel; and we,
the animals and objects, must be here
without striking a spark of evidence
that anything that every stopped living
ever falls back to living when life stops.
There’s a pale romance to the watchmaker God
of Descartes and Paley; He drafted and installed
us in the Apparatus. He loved to tinker;
but having perfected what he had to do,
stood off shrouded in his loneliness.

a bizonyosság egyetlen szikrája nélkül,
hogy az, ami egykor bevégezte a létét,
még föléled, mikor az élet véget ér.
Descartes és Paley órásmester Istenének
sápadt románca ez, megtervezett minket és beszerelt
a Gépezetébe. Imádta a barkácsolást,
de miután tökéletesítette azt, amit kellett,
magányába burkolózott és félreállt.

Orbán Ottó fordítása

Robert Lowell in his study

"But sometimes everything I write
with the threadbare art of my eye
seems a snapshot,
lurid, rapid, garish, grouped,
heightened from life,
yet paralyzed by fact.
All's misalliance.
Yet why not say what happened?"
